Mpumalanga - Department of Agriculture, Rural Development & Land Administrtion

1. RURAL DEVELOPMENT

The Rural Development mandate arises from the Medium Term Strategic Framework (MTSF) strategic objective number 3: Comprehensive Rural Strategy linked to Land and Agrarian Reform. This provides for the department’s responsibilities of stimulating agriculture production with a view to contributing to food security and providing pre- and post- settlement support in the implementation of land reform Programmes.

3. LAND ADMINISTRATION

The White Paper on Spatial Planning and Land Use Management, 2001 stipulates that is important is to maximize the potential of the scarce and high quality agricultural land and to ensure that the correct land is set aside for tourism and other natural resources, of which the country is heavily dependent on.

4.Lowveld College-Agriculture

During the early fifties, South Africa was divided into seven agricultural regions for agricultural services. At that time five of the seven regions had agricultural services and Agricultural Colleges. In October 1955, the opening of a new Agricultural College was approved. However, the location of the said College was to be a subject of intense debate, until the Lowveld got final selection as a suitable base for such a College.

5. Marapyane College

The Lowveld College of Agriculture situated in Nelspruit, is one of 12 Agricultural Colleges in South Africa. The college has a satellite campus at Marapyane.
